Interspace Gallery
Interspace Gallery creates a focus for contemporary visual arts and design in Westport through local, national and international exhibitions as well as exchanges and joint ventures with other galleries, art collectives and projects. The gallery was recycled and completed at the end of September 2013. It originally was a dining room as part of the old Albion Hotel. It now provides a clear and definite white space with strong focal lighting and is able to host large exhibitions. The design of the space allows for smaller hangings with discrete partitioning giving an intimate feel to the experience. The room is centrally heated. We encourage friends to subscribe to our mailing list and can advise you of forthcoming events, details, times and news related to the Gallery.

I write this some eight months since we opened and fourteen shows later. Much has been learned over the time.
We recognize that taking responsibility for hosting the shows, puts us in the role of curators and with that somehow the caretakers of a collective experience. We decided early on, in response to the questions, to charge only a 10% commission on sales of works and thus introduced an ethos of accessibility, participation, shared responsibility and cooperation. This also firmly established the gallery as a 'viewing' gallery" and perhaps removed some obstacles to people wanting to show their work.
Interspace Gallery is open every day for the duration of each show from 10.00-4.00pm. The 'Opening Night' times may vary with each individual show. Generally they will be held on Friday evenings from 6.00pm-8.00pm

As we prepare for our Spring/Summer cycle of Shows I notice a change in thinking about the gallery and about showing.
We have had twenty five shows since beginning two years ago. We did not have any shows over the past two months, through the depths of winter, and now we begin the opening out into Spring and Summer.
Last month Audrey and I were not clear about our intention with the gallery, but then nothing was happening and now, this week we are involved with preparing the gallery and hanging works for an opening on the weekend.
This focus has helped enormously with the problem of meaning and the clarity it brings renews the commitment to
host artists in showing their work in a calm, peaceful and respectful space, free from pressures to sell or commercialize their efforts and with support which helps perhaps to remove obstacles to presenting their work for the people of this small west coast town to enjoy and experience and to know just a little bit more, the people who make up our community and our world.

At the time of writing we have hosted 32 shows in the gallery. Well done, and now I'm thinking of change.
With Luca and Veronika running the hotel more and more these days, it has opened up new possibilities for space and services we can offer people. To this end we see the 'gallery' become more like a lounge extension of the hotel space for guests and visitors with a prospect of offering food and coffee..
We will continue to host shows of local artists and all in a mixed environment.
